Black Mountain Tower, formerly known as Telstra Tower - a telecommunication tower located on top of Black Mountain in Australia's capital Canberra. One of the most notable attractions in height 195, 2 meters offers visitors a wonderful panoramic views of Canberra and its surroundings with one of the three viewing platforms or a revolving restaurant.

In April 1970, Australian Communications Minister instructed the Department to carry out the construction and development works for the erection of the tower on Black Mountain, which could provide communication services and serve as a meeting place for residents and visitors alike. The tower was supposed to replace the relay station on the Red Hills and television antennas, while existing at the Black Mountain. Already at the design stage a heated debate - the public feared that the tower because of its position at the top of the mountain will dominate other important objects aesthetically Canberra. The High Court of Australia was even filed a lawsuit against the government's decision on the construction of the tower, but the court sided with the state, and construction began. May 15, 1980 Telstra Tower inaugurated former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser.

Today, in addition to the tower companies that provide communications services to the public, there are three viewing platforms (one inside the building and two outside), cafe, gift shop and rotating restaurant «Alto Tower». Canberra's only revolving restaurant rotates at 360º for 81 minutes, allowing the visitors during the meal enjoy a variety of views from the windows.

Until recently, in the lobby of the tower was an exhibition "Making a connection" on the history of telecommunications in Australia since the early days up to the beginning of the 21st century. It also has a small video room where you can watch a short film about the design and construction of the tower, taken immediately after its opening.

Tower on Black Mountain has become one of the main symbols of Canberra and a major tourist attraction - it was visited by more than 6 million people! In 1989, the World Federation of skyscrapers tower has included in its list, putting it close to such famous buildings as the CN Tower in Toronto, Blackpool Tower in England and the Empire State Building in New York. Today the tower on Black Mountain - one of the most impressive buildings in Canberra on the horizon, visible from many parts of the city and suburbs.
