Avella - a city in the province of Avellino in the Italian region of Campania. Antique Abella, lying 10 km north-east of Nola, was a city of average importance, both for its first inhabitants, the Samnites and later the Romans. Its attraction was a large amphitheater-like Pompeian. We can assume that the founders of the Abell were Greeks from Halkida, and later it became the Oscan town, like neighboring Nola. Strabo and Pliny mention Avella as one of the cities in the campaign, which had the status of a colony.
Modern Avella is located on a plain at the foot of the Apennine Mountains and the ruins of the ancient city is still known as Avella Vecchio, occupy a very high hill, with a panoramic view of the plain lying at the bottom. On the territory of the hill preserved fragments amphitheater, a temple, a variety of residential buildings, as well as part of the ancient city walls - the total area of the archaeological area is quite large. One of the most important artifacts discovered here a long inscription on a dead Oscan, which tells of the alliance between the inhabitants of Nola and Avella. The inscription dates from the period of the Second Punic War (3rd century BC) and is characterized by an abundance of interesting details.
Not far from Avella is karst cave Grotte di Camerelle di Pyanura. A medieval city attractions include the church of Santi Nazario e Martiri Chelsio, built in 9-11 centuries.
