Fortress Bernstein

Bernstein Fortress, located on the border of Austria and Hungary, was first mentioned in chronicles as early as the year 860. Records show that Bernstein was a border fortress. In 1199 the fortress belonged to Hungary in the first half of the thirties of the 13th century became the property of the Austrian authorities, but from 1236 was back in power in Hungary.

In 1388 the owners of the castle, the Duke of Anjou, were in great debt and laid a lock. The next 70 years Bernstein often changed their owners. In 1440 the fortress was captured by Frederick III and remained in his power for a long time. In the 15th century the castle several times been subjected to the Turkish attacks and sieges, so in 1532 began the construction of fortifications. It began chipping away of the Gothic style in favor of a soft baroque. In 1703, the owners decided to completely rebuild the entire southern part, which has been transformed by the architect L. Basiani. In 1892, Bernstein bought the family diamonds. At the end of the First World War diamonds have to take part of the premises of the castle in employment.
In 1953, the castle became a fully working as a hotel. Today, owners of the Castle is the family Berger-Almasy.

The owners of the castle preserved its unique interior. Guests can see the ancient atmosphere, furniture and interiors. Castle - a real museum, where you can live. Guests can enjoy an old working fireplace, eat cooked in the oven, this Knights' Hall. The castle has a rich library with about 30,000 volumes of literature.
