Aveiro - a city with a rich historical past. He is also considered one of the most exciting cities in Portugal and because of the many canals built it is also called "Venice of Portugal". The town lies on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and is 220 km from Lisbon.
The city's history begins in the tenth century. Due to its proximity to the ocean Aveiro was quite a major seaport and famous for its fishermen. In addition to fishing, the population is still engaged in the extraction of salt, thanks to this fishery Aveiro quickly began to prosper. Initially it was a small settlement, which in XIII century became a town. Aveiro was a successful city until the XVI century. In 1575 there was a strong storm that brought a lot of sand and silt, and blocked the harbor. Today Aveiro again thriving.
The city has many monuments, some of which are included in UNESCO World Heritage List. Connoisseurs of medieval architecture should visit the historic city center, where the town hall, Paços do Conseil. The Town Hall was built in the XVIII century Tuscan style, which in Portugal is quite rare. Not far from the town hall stands a pillory - Pelourinho de Eshgeyra, built in the second half of the XVIII century, and replaced by another post, more ancient, established at the beginning of the XVI century. In 1933 the pillory was listed as a monument of local importance.
