Greece is considered to be the birthplace of Western civilization. It is an ancient country, history and traditions of which there are more than one millennium. Greece is the cradle of science, culture and education. The Greek education system originated in the era of ancient Greece and reached its peak in the 6th century BC As early as the 5th century BC among the free Athenians were hard to find illiterate people. May 3, 1837, at the residence of the famous Greek architect Stamatis Kleantesa, was founded National University of Athens Ioannis Capodistrias (University of Athens). The university is named after the first president of Greece. Previously, it was known as the University of Otto. This is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Greece, was the first University not only of Greece, but also in all the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean.

In 1841, classes were transferred to the new building, designed by the Danish architect Theophil von Hansen. The old building now houses the Museum of History of the University of Athens.

While the university had four faculties: Theology, Law, Medicine and Arts. Faculty of Arts included a study of applied sciences and mathematics. It is interesting that initially 52 to 33 students taught by Professor.

An important change in the structure of the university occurred in 1904, when the Faculty of Arts was divided into two faculties: Arts and Sciences. Faculty of Science includes a pharmaceutical school, the Department of Mathematics and Physics.
