National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, was founded in October 2000 and is the only public institution in Athens, specializing in modern Greek and international art. Inspirer and Director of the Museum was Anna Kafetsi (former curator of the National Gallery).
Starting its activities, the museum had no own premises or collections, and his first exhibition was rather experimental. The museum collection was formed on the basis of both its own acquisitions and private donations. At present day in the ownership of the museum has more than 700 exhibits - paintings, drawings, installations, sculpture, photography, video, the "new media" and more. In the museum you can see works by masters such as Ilya Kabakov, Gary Hill, Nan Goldin, Allan Sekula, Dimitris Alitiinis, Nikos Navridis, Bill Viola, Bruce Nauman, Mona Hatoum, Vito Acconci, Dan Graham, Chris Burden, Nam June Paik, Costas Tsoklis, Lynda Benglis, etc. The pride of the museum, of course, is his magnificent library.
Home to the new museum was chosen located in the heart of Athens old industrial building of the former brewery Fix, built in the second half of the 19th century. In the 50s of the 20th century was a large-scale reconstruction of the brewery by the famous architect Takis Zenetosa, but two decades later, the building was abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair. In order to make this a masterpiece of industrial architecture of the museum, which meets all modern requirements and standards of these institutions require a global reconstruction.
In its early years the leadership of the National Museum of Modern Art organized an exhibition on the first floor of a former brewery, but later the museum's collection are temporarily moved to the building of the Athens Conservatory, and in the former brewery began large-scale construction work. The building has a total area of about 20,000 square meters. m. will be provided space for permanent and temporary exhibitions, archives, library, workshops, specially equipped classrooms for lectures and seminars, as well as shops and cafes.
Reconstruction of buildings suspected to be completed by October 2013, and in March 2014 is expected to the grand opening of the National Museum of Modern Art.
