Above the urban districts of Athens, in the heart of Mount Lycabettus stands (Lycabettus). The height of the mountain 277 meters above sea level. This legendary place, which offers a great view of Athens, the Acropolis, the sea and the mountains surrounding the city.
According to legend, the goddess Athena wanted to her sanctuary, located on the Acropolis, it was closer to the sky. One day she went to Mount Pentelikon and tore from it a piece of rock, to plant it over the Acropolis. When she comes back, she stopped two birds brought bad news. Athena threw the rock, and hurried after them. Conceived it has not carried out, and the mountain was left where it was thrown.
In ancient times, Lycabettus was covered with dense forest, but by the early 19th century on the mountain, not a single tree. Restoring vegetation began only in 1880. Once there lived wolves, so Lycabettus is also called Wolf Mountain.
On top of the mountain is the Byzantine church of Saint George, it is called the Church of the Holy Sidereya. It was built in XI-XII centuries, when the Byzantine Empire and Christianity significantly strengthened their positions. In 1930, a fire destroyed the church, but in 1931, a snow-white church was completely restored. On Easter night the parishioners with candles descend down and it seems that encircles Lycabettus fiery tape.
