The Museum Center "Chukotka Heritage" in Anadyr is the central research and educational institution of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. The museum was founded in 2002 as a result of the compound of the Regional Local History Museum with the State Centre for the Protection and restoration of historical and cultural monuments of the Chukotka Autonomous District.
Formation of the museum's collection began in 1931 with the creation of the Bureau of Local History, one of the main problems which the organization of the museum district and the accumulation of collections. In 1935, in the city for the needs of the museum it was bought a small apartment house, built of local old resident Nikolayev paneling American schooner, which bore the name "Polar Star". After a while it became a center for the collection and preservation of movable monuments of historical and cultural heritage, as well as to promote knowledge of local history.
