Photo: Umm Qais (Gadara)
One of the cities of the Greco-Roman Decapolis was essentially destroyed by the Turks. Now in addition, that the remains of the ancient city before the eyes of the visitors are available yet and restored residence of the Turkish Governor, the Archaeological Museum, from the hills of Gadara offers stunning views of the northern part of the Jordan Valley, Lake Tiberias (Sea of Galilee) in Israeli territory, the border river Yarmuk, Golan Heights and snow-capped peak of Mount Hermon (Jabal Sheikh). Abil lies northeast of Umm Qais, and is famous for its Roman temples, Byzantine churches and mosques, located right in the middle of olive groves.
