Santa Barbara Castle is located on Mount benacantil right in the center of Alicante and is visible from almost anywhere in the city and the entire coast. On the mountain benacantil archaeologists have found items indicating human activity here during the Bronze Age, the development of Iberian culture, the rule of the Roman Empire. The castle of St. Barbara, which is a massive fortress was built here in the period of the Arab conquests in the late 9th century. His name is obliged to lock the fact that it was conquered by Muslims Infante Alfonso of Castile on the day of commemoration of Saint Barbara, December 4, 1248.
Throughout its history, the castle was exposed to substantial changes. 50 years after its conquest by the Spaniards, the King Jaime II, he was a little rebuilt. When King Pedro IV, nearly a century later, there were completed additional wall, and on the orders of King Charles I in the early 16th century, the fortress was built fortifications. Also in the 16th century it was built the main room and utility rooms, which have remained intact to this day.
The fortress has suffered greatly from the many wars that have affected Spain. Since 1963, the fortress is open for free visits.
Three-level Santa Barbara Castle stands before us in all its glory. On the first level is a monument known military leaders of Alicante and the Viceroy of New Mexico, Felix Berenguer de Markin. The second and third levels are the most notable structures such as the hall Philip II, watchdog body, English bastion, the Hall of Fame, and a dilapidated old chapel of St. Barbara. The castle can be viewed and a collection of sculpture, represented mainly busts of prominent personalities of Spain. On top of the fortress offers an amazing view of Alicante and the Mediterranean coast.
