Alexandroupolis - a port city on the northeast coast of Greece. It is the capital of the nome of Evros (Thrace) and is located in close proximity to the borders with Turkey and Bulgaria. Today Alexandroupolis is not only an important commercial and cultural center of the region, but also quite a popular resort with well-developed infrastructure.

A favorite vacation spot of locals and visitors to the city, no doubt, is a picturesque promenade with many excellent restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs. There is also the so-called "Turkish Lighthouse" - the main attraction, but also a symbol of Alexandroupolis. Lighthouse is a massive stone tower of cylindrical shape with a broad base and its height is 18 meters (the height of the lighthouse above sea level - 27 m). Under ideal weather conditions, the lighthouse is visible from a distance of approximately 23-24 nautical miles. Overcoming the 98 steps you can climb to the top platform of the lighthouse and admire the beautiful panoramic views.

In the second half of the 19th century, Alexandroupolis, which then was called Dedeagach was just a small fishing village that was rapidly developing. After the start of construction of the port, as well as taking into account the relative proximity rather narrow Dardanelles it became obvious and the need to build the lighthouse in Alexandroupolis. Works were supervised by a French company that specializes in such projects. How long does it take construction is not known exactly, but June 1st, 1880 the lighthouse was put into operation. Initially, the lighthouse worked for acetylene and later began to use petroleum. Since 1974, the lighthouse runs on electricity. In 2002, the complete replacement of the electrical equipment for a new meeting modern standards.
