One of the main attractions of the Greek city of Alexandroupolis is the Ecclesiastical Museum. It was founded in 1976 on the initiative of Metropolitan Anthimos and is administered by the Holy Metropolis of Alexandroupolis. Unique relics presented in the museum, perfectly illustrate the history of religious art in the region.

Today the church museum is located in the heart of the city on Cathedral Square in the beautiful two-storey neo-classical mansion Leontarideyo (until 1982, the museum held several rooms at the Cultural Center). The building was built in 1909 for businessman from Maroni (Rodopi prefecture) Leontaridisa Antonio, who after returning from Russia decided to settle in Alexandroupolis. Later, he gave the mansion to the city, and until 1972, the building housed a secondary school for boys.

Excellent museum's collection consists mainly of religious relics collected in churches and monasteries of the Metropolis of Alexandroupolis. A significant contribution to the completion of the collection had and private donations. Most of the artifacts dated back to the 18th and 19th centuries, but there are among the treasures of the museum and church relics dating from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries (mainly incunabula and several icons).

The museum features more than 400 unique exhibits. At the same time more and, perhaps, the most important part of the collection of the Museum of Church make a variety of icons. In the museum you can also see the vestments of priests, various church utensils, coins, important historical documents and much more.

Today, Ecclesiastical Museum of Alexandroupolis is considered one of the finest such museums in Greece and has a great historical and cultural value.
