Museum of Naive Art - Museum of Fine Arts in Zagreb, dedicated to creative artists of the primitives of the 20th century. The museum fund consists of over 1,850 works of art, including paintings, drawings, sculptures and engravings executed mostly Croats, but there are also works of other well-known international artists of this genre.

In 1952, Zagreb was founded Peasant Art Gallery. In 1956, it was known as the Gallery of primitive art and is part of the Municipal Gallery (now - the Gallery of Modern Art). Since 1994, in accordance with the decision of the Croatian Parliament, the museum called the Croatian Museum of Naive Art. From the beginning, the museum operates on a strict museological principles, and is considered the world's first Museum of Naive Art. Since 2002, the museum has focused on the coverage of schools and students, and an intensification of training each year to the International Museum Day.

Naive or primitive, primitive art is an independent segment of the art of the 20th century. Naive art appeared in Croatia in the early 30s. Naive Art was originally associated with the work of peasants and workers, of which the most successful over time become professional artists. To naive art include the works of artists who are self-taught way or another, have not undergone special training, but who have achieved a high level of art. Recognizable individual style and poetic nature distinguishes artists from primitives "lovers." Sight-primitivist artist usually produces unusual proportions and certain non-logical form and space. Thus, the artists express their free creative imagination, by analogy with other areas of 20th century art, such as symbolism, expressionism, cubism and surrealism.

The Croatian naive art is also seen as a democratic movement, which proves that regardless of formal training, anyone can create a work of art. Common themes include works such as the "joy of life", "lost childhood", "That's interesting" and others.

In the present museum collection focus is on Croatian artists famous Hlebinskoy school, as well as some independent artists. The collection includes works since 1930. Known generalic Ivan was one of the first naive painters in Croatia, developed a distinguishable style and creativity reached a high professional level in his art. In the works of the 30s is dominated by social issues, while in later works show an idealistic views, which give more scope to the imagination, rather than just the image of open space. The works of the second generation of artists Hlebinskoy school (50-60 years.) Include burlesque and grotesque figures, as well as works inspired by Biblical themes with a strong use of color.

Museum also organizes special exhibitions with a focus on individual artists or to highlight certain aspects of naive art.

The Gallery of Modern Art exhibited the most complete collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings by Croatian artists ages 19-20. The collection includes about 10,000 works of art, which are from 1934 in the historic Palace Vranychany in downtown Zagreb.

Gallery of Modern Art, and originally for the Croatian national art dates back to the beginning of 1900, when it was founded by the artistic community of the paintings and sculptures acquired by its members as well as donations from Bishop Strossmayer. In 1905 it was bought 3 of the fund in the future Modern Art Gallery. The collection grew slowly until 1914 and was presented only to interested parties. As the collection expanded, in 1934, the gallery moved to its current building. Vranychany Palace was built in 1882. Magnificent receptions the past have been replaced by the contemplative atmosphere of the Modern Art Gallery.

Full reconstruction of the palace took place from 1993 to 2005, when the current exhibition was presented to the public. Two floors of the palace has become a modern equipped galleries, presenting visitors a permanent collection of Croatian modern painting and sculpture. The fully restored historical rooms, the gallery is "200 years of Croatian fine arts (1800-2000)", a representative sample of 650-700 best painters, sculptors and manufacturers of medals. Gallery of Modern Art has become the most famous and complete Croatian Museum of Modern Art. Since 1960, there are retrospective and monographic exhibitions of works by famous Croatian artists, as well as exhibitions of Croatian and European contemporary art.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Gallery of Modern Art holds special exhibitions. In 2009 he established a multi-touch tactile gallery, to aid visually impaired visitors to experience the basic features of the Croatian contemporary art through touch and sound.

In 2010, it opened a new multimedia exhibition entitled "The iconography of cities in the Croatian art from the first half of the 20th century." The viewer is presented in Figure motive city, painting, drawing, art photography: on posters and in films, literature and music. The exhibition includes more than 150 works.
