Translated from the Chinese word "Banpo" means "half slope", and the village itself is a classic settlement, which arose in the Neolithic period. The village belongs to the Banpo Yangshao Chinese culture, which existed from 5 to 3 thousand years BC The name culture was due to the fact that the first ancient finds, which have been associated with this civilization, were made at a place called Yangshao, located in Henan Province.

In various places of the valley of the Yellow River by scientists it was found about 400 sites that have been assigned specifically to this culture. Place called Banpo - the largest of them. This village was found in 1953, while building the power plant was launched. Archaeological excavations lasted for about 4 years. In 1958, the museum finds Banpo opened its doors to visitors. Since then, this place is visited by over 2 million people.

The settlement occupies a total area of ​​approximately 50 thousand square meters. meters. The entire area is divided into 3 parts: a place where the locals engaged in manufacturing of tableware and other utensils made of clay, the area where the villagers were buried, and living area. At the site of ancient ruins was found 46 houses, 2 premises for cattle and more than 200 warehouses in the form of pits, the burial of 174 adults and 73 children's graves, as well as 6 kilns fired pottery and a lot of tools and instruments. Visitors have the opportunity to present and see the way of life of ancient people.

Inside the museum are two exhibition halls, as well as one room, which is located at the site. In the first section demonstrates the tools used by the villagers: sickles, knives of stone, hooks for fishing. In the second room are located objects that show the development of technological progress in the life of the inhabitants of the neighborhood, as well as works of art that reflect the social and cultural aspects of those times.
