Franciscan Monastery and the Church of Sts. Philip and James are on a high plateau on the banks of the Danube in the old part of Vukovar. The foundation stone of the church dedicated to the Apostles Philip and James, was founded in 1723. Construction of the church ended 10 years later, in 1733, and the building of the monastery was completed in 1736. Later, the church was rebuilt and restored.

In the years 1896-1897 underwent extensive renovations and expansion of the monastery and the church under the guidance Viennese architect Richard Jordan. After the expansion of the church acquired a length of 58 meters, making it the third in Croatia after Zagreb dyakovskogo and cathedrals.

The monastery and the church are typical of buildings in the style of "baroque Maria Theresa", widespread in continental Croatia.

During the Serbian aggression church and monastery suffered greatly since undergone more than 3,000 air strikes. Most of the property was saved by the Franciscans outside Croatia.
