Cherepish Monastery of Our Lady of the Assumption - the monastery under the jurisdiction of the Orthodox Church of Bulgaria, as well as one of the most famous monasteries in Bulgaria. It is located nearly 30 kilometers from the town of Vratsa, on the shore of the Iskar River and at the foot of the mighty cliffs, where many caves carved. It is a cultural monument of national significance.

The monastery was founded during the reign of Ivan Shishman - in the XIV century. According to legend, the name of the monastery is connected with the location here sets the bones of soldiers killed under the command of the king Shishman during one of the bloodiest battles of the Turks.

The monastery was restored at the end of the XVI century Bulgarian icon-painter, scribes and temple builders Pimen Zografski. He turned the monastery into the center, where the focus as a book, and spiritual activities. It was here in 1612 was created by the legendary Cherepish Four Gospels in a silver chasuble. Activities aimed at creating ecclesiastical literacy, the monastery lasted until the XVIII century.

The two-storey ossuary was built in 1784 directly in a cliff overlooking the monastery. Chapel-ossuary is dedicated to St. John the Baptist.

Over the centuries, the rule of the Turks burned the monastery several times, but each time he patiently rebuilt. Violent raids kirdzhaley Russian after the war with the Turks (between 1787 and 1891 years) forced the monks to leave the monastery, but in 1802 he again became active.

Between 1950 and 1990, the monastery served Cherepish location for the seminary of Sofia, as a number of buildings and adjacent land was confiscated by the decision of the authorities.
