In the historic center of Kamyshin is the oldest building of the city - St. Nicholas Church, built in 1775. In the era of Catherine the Great was forbidden to bury the churches in the city (after the plague epidemic, fear of infection) and Dmitrievka (nowadays - Kamyshin), it was decided to build a temple at the newly formed cemetery.

Nicholas Church was the smallest in the city and the temple was rebuilt in 1825, increasing the inner area. The decoration of the church began with the column portico and trinadtsatimetrovy spherical dome. In 1909, architect Peter and Paul is drafting a new large church dedicated to St. Nicholas, but the outbreak of the First World War, followed by the revolution and did not allow the plans to fruition. The looting of the church building in post-revolutionary period was engaged in warehouses, and eventually the empty temple structure was in complete disrepair.

In December 1944, the cost of enormous efforts of the parish church is open, but the construction work, chanting and gathering donations were banned. From 1950 to 1970 in the Volgograd region worked only two churches, one of which Kamyshinsky. In the 1980s, a new tower was built (on the ruins) and carried out minor repairs of the temple. In 1985, on Easter day, for the first time in many years, we were given permission to peal.

Today, fully renovated in 2012, St. Nicholas Church is a cathedral, listed in the list of protected monuments of history and architecture. Near the cathedral are the ancient tombs ravaged cemetery and necropolis at the church. The cathedral is a library, Sunday school and family center of skill and crafts.
