Historical Museum is one of the oldest scientific and cultural institutions in the city of Vidin. This socially significant facility, whose tasks include the preservation, processing and promotion of cultural and historical values.

The base of the museums in Vidin region dates back to 1910, when they were created and the first archaeological community museum collection. After the war, in the mid 20s. the last century, archaeological community "Bononia" started active work of collecting materials and under the guidance of a teacher Vasil Atanasov organized in an old Turkish-mail exhibit, which presented samples of ancient coins and national embroidery.

Currently, the Historical Museum in Vidin takes a worthy place among the other national museums in Bulgaria. With the success of continuing scientific activity, constantly replenished museum funds (they now number more than 63 thousand exhibits).

The museum exposition is divided into several major thematic sections. Sections "Archaeology" (with subcategories "Prehistory", "Antiquity", "Middle Ages"), "Bulgarian land XV-XIX centuries.", "New History" and others. Since the middle of last century, located in a renovated main building "Konaka" which is a monument of architecture. Here is a rich collection of items belonging to different historical periods. In a separate exhibition room is located Numismatic Collection, which includes more than 30 thousand coins.

Ethnographic exhibition in 1969 is in the building "Krystatata barracks." The construction, destined for the Bulgarian military, was built in 1801. Part of the museum complex is the "Baba Vida" - the only Bulgarian fully extant medieval fortress.

The library fund of the museum has about 4,600 volumes.
