One of the most famous attractions Jelling are Runestones. These are two rune stone - big and small - with inscriptions carved on them the tenth century. These rune stone was included in 1994 in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Runestones located in southern Jutland, 10 km north-west of Vejle .  Runes are a tremendous historical value, representing the transition from the pagan Viking age in the Christian Middle Ages .  Documented the appearance of small rune is not fixed, but it is known that the current location of its roughly dates back to the year 1630 .  The text engraved on the stone inscription reads: "Gorm king made a memorial stone in honor of Tyury, his wife, Denmark" .  This is the first mention of Denmark as a state .  Big runestone was probably set between 953 and 965 years, its height of 2, 43 m and weighs 10 tons .  Text runic inscriptions on one of the three sides of the stone informs "King Harald, who set this stone in honor of Gorm, his father, and Tyury his mother .  Harald, who conquered all of Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christians " .  On the southwestern side of the stone to save the image of Christ's crucifixion .  On the third side - paintings of mythical animals .

Near the rune stones arranged burial and the church of whitewashed stone, the predecessor of the three wooden churches which have been destroyed by fire.

Over the years, the rocks were exposed to natural elements, and they began to appear cracks began to fade runic inscriptions, while the Danes, it was decided to cover the rune glass protective caps.
