One of the most famous houses in Ulm - Kornhaus - was built in 1954. The architect of the project was Kaspar Schmid, the house was conceived as a three-story, high arches. Interestingly, earlier in the same place it was a warehouse for grain, but it burned down in a fire. The decision to build a new house with the same purpose was due to functional necessity to store grain for the needs of the citizens and for sale.
The style in which the architect has fulfilled the project itself, and then the builders have realized it in practice - a renaissance. Even today, when the building was completely redone inside and is a thoroughly modern center for exhibitions, conferences and concerts, it felt a subtle romantic touch of the distant 16th century.
Initially, the building was constructed according to the rules of granaries: a kind of barn made of logs, plastered on top. Interesting timbered gables gave him exquisite style and drew attention to the construction. Portals on the south and north side of the specially been conceived in different forms, it is one of the distinguishing features of the architectural style. Thus, the southern portal is a prime example of late Gothic architecture, complete with some details specific to the Renaissance.
Unfortunately, during the raid on Ulm in 1944 Kornhaus was virtually destroyed. After the end of World War II it was restored using the surviving drawings and old photos, but it affected only the external decoration. Deciding to make the inside of the house modern facilities, it was right: today the building is famous in the business and commercial circles of the city.
