Government House (Shtadthaus) is one of the architectural sights of Ulm. Government House located in the heart of the city, in front of the Cathedral and is a showy white building of concrete and glass. Sharply contrasting modern architecture of this building wonderfully underscores the severity of the surrounding medieval houses and Gothic cathedral.
A few centuries at this place before the Munster area was a monastery. In 1878, before the completion of construction of the highest in Europe, the spire of the cathedral, the monastery was demolished, that nothing prevented the review of this magnificent building. But no buildings Cathedral Square began to look empty and uncomfortable, and for the next hundred years, the city authorities have repeatedly attempted to its development. There is evidence of 17 design competitions held areas, but only in 1987 the citizens through a referendum decided to build a new building.
The building was designed by the renowned American architect Richard Meier. Construction lasted for 3 years and in 1993, Government House was inaugurated. The spacious rooms of the four-storey building with a total area of 3600 square meters located state institutions, the exhibition of archeology and history of the cathedral square, exhibitions, meetings, concerts and other public events.
