The old quarter Auf dem Kreuz - one of the business cards of the city - located about 1 km from Ulm Cathedral. Now carefully restored privileged area with limited traffic. About half of the buildings quarter Auf dem Kreuz built before 1700. They have been fully restored as a result of a complete reconstruction of the area, which began in 1974. After graduation in 1999, paved streets, luxurious and carefully restored old houses, harmoniously complemented by new buildings, Ulm demonstrate the late Middle Ages and the changes to it for several centuries.
All quarter Auf dem Kreuz can be bypassed for a few tens of minutes, but do not be so hasty. Every house, every building worthy of careful examination and study. It is here that are attractions such as the Chapel of St. Sebastian, the first mention of which relates to 1415, the historic Arsenal building built in 1433, the old tower of the former ramparts Zeelturm and Gensturm.
It was here, in the quarter Auf dem Kreuz was the house in which spent the first 15 months of his life the great native of Ulm, Albert Einstein. In 1984, on the ground completely destroyed by bombing in 1944 the building is a monument-fountain by sculptor Jürgen Gёrtsa. It consists of three parts: the rocket, meaning technical progress, snails, symbolizing the wisdom of nature and tranquility, and Einstein's head peeking out of the house of the cochlea with a sly look.
