Historical museum of regional scale is located in the central part of Stara Zagora. Its funds have several thousands of the most important exhibits in the museum showcases stores different information about the history of the city, region and country as a whole.

It is known that the area of ​​Stara Zagora was inhabited in ancient times - evidenced by the exhibits are located in the first hall of the exhibition. The earliest traces of human scientists have discovered belongs to the New Stone Age. Special map indicates the location of residential mounds, the number of which exceeds one hundred. All of them have been found around Stara Zagora, and five of these mounds and all were in the city. The exhibit also presents tools made of bones, antlers and flint, pottery of unusual forms and ancient jewelry.

The period of Roman rule is also reflected in the thematic exposition. The most interesting and unique historical monument are the remains of the Roman Forum of Augusta Traiana. From him came two walls - the south and west, as well as Teatron where held citywide cultural events. In the museum during this period represented the glass, bronze lamps, statues, ornaments and coins found during the excavation.

But also interesting is that during the construction of the new museum building, work was discovered a fragment of the central streets of Cardo Maximus. It is this street were connected North and South gates. Old Street was restored and preserved by experts, so that today you can see the street on the ground floor of the museum on the spot of the original location. Roman street was almost six meters wide, and on both sides of the sidewalks were built of stone, which extends out a total of nearly doubled. Available for inspection fragment streets decorated just the way it was made in ancient Rome - columns, stone reliefs and statues. On the wall you can see the mural depicting the continuation of the street, referring to non-existent today, the South goal.

In other rooms there are various exhibits, through which you can understand how the fate of the city in the period of late antiquity, the Middle Ages and the National Revival period.
