Ancient fortifications Žumberk, based on the bank of the river, gives a complete picture of the organization of life in the traditional Czech village. The settlement, consisting of the houses of the peasants, and numerous farm buildings, surrounded by high walls.

Interestingly, it is not a stylized village, which is an open air museum, and now the village was founded in the XIII century by German colonists. It appeared as a military fortification, hail, which could repel any attack of the enemy. Gothic towers, which are part of the high walls, equipped with a viewing platform, from where it was very convenient to observe the surroundings. In the XV century the fortress began to be used as an ordinary estate. On its territory raised cattle treated grain brewed beer. I was here and smithy and pottery and other craft workshops. In principle, before the tourists it appears well organized village, which itself produced all the necessary things in life. In the XVII century it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style.

In the 70-ies of XX century Žumberk reconstructed and made it a museum. The historical interiors preserved from the past centuries, demonstrates a rich collection of furniture items collected from the villages of South Bohemia. Many of the items are unique paintings by craftsmen.

In the medieval bastion there are several hotel rooms, which are rented to tourists. There are in the village and the church of the Beheading of John the Baptist, which was erected in 1332.
