Tomb of Alexander I Battenberg, the first after the crushing of autonomous Ottoman ruler of Bulgaria, located in the center of Sofia. It - historical, architectural and cultural national monument. Free entrance to the mausoleum.

Prince Alexander I - the son of the Prince of Hesse-Darmstadt, which, in turn, accounted for the Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna brother .  He was born in Italy in 1857 .  As a teenager, he graduated from the German Cadet School .  Later, a volunteer went to the front to participate in the Russian-Turkish war .  After the expulsion of the Turks in 1879, Alexander Batenberg was elected prince of the Bulgarian Principality because of protectorate Russian autocrat Alexander II .  During the same period, the state of Bulgaria began to recover .  However, in 1886, Prince Alexander from the throne and refused to leave Bulgaria, moved to Austria, where since 1889 as a major general was listed in Infantry Regiment .  Connected Care ruler was a pressure that is exerted on the Russian domestic policy of the Bulgarian state .  Name former governor also had to change - he began a new life as a graph Hartenau .  Has got a family, children (who, incidentally, have been named Bulgarian names - Vera Tsvetana and Krum-Assen) . 

Duke died in 1893 in Austria. According to the Bulgarian National Assembly, as well as the dying wish of the prince himself, his body was taken for burial in Sofia. The coffin with the remains of the ruler of Bulgaria kept in the temple of Saint George until 1987, when the mausoleum was completed.

Author of the project - Swiss architect Jakob Meyer. The building height of 11 m made in starogrecheskom architectural style, the height of the crown - 1, 7 meters.
