Bolkow Castle is located in the same city on the castle hill at an altitude of 396 meters above sea level. It was built from the local green and red shale and sandstone. Probably the first one was built a stone tower located on the highest point of the hill, however, documentary evidence does not exist. The first mention of the castle dates back to 1277 year.
The castle was founded by the Duke of Legnica II and developed rapidly. In the middle of the fourteenth century, it was part of the city fortifications and was connected to the city walls. In 1392 the castle became the property of Czech kings.
During the Thirty Years War, the castle was under siege, but remained unconquered. Already in 1810 it became the property of the State Treasury of Prussia, after which the building fell into disrepair. In 1813, after the Napoleonic wars, the Russian soldiers stationed here.
After Hitler came to power, the castle became the property of the state. It is believed that here was located a research center, supervises the local factories.
In 1953, in some rooms of the castle was a branch of the National Museum in Wroclaw. On the first floor you could see the engravings, furniture, and genealogical tables. The second floor has a collection of weapons: swords, halberds, armor. Currently, there is a permanent exhibition on the ground floor.
In July 2001 the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Wroclaw conducted archaeological research aimed at studying the ancient principles of construction of the castle.
