Santiago Cathedral is the main church of the Catholic Church in Chile. The temple is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is located in the center of Santiago, overlooking the Plaza de Armas and the Plaza Mayor. The architectural ensemble consists of the cathedral of the Archbishop's Palace and the temple itself. All these buildings are considered to be national monuments in 1951.
The present church is the fifth in this place. The four previous buildings were destroyed by fire or earthquake. Construction of a new cathedral was begun in 1748. He was in charge of the architect Matthias Butler Vazquez Acuna, who has decided to make the church bigger and resistant to future earthquakes. The project of the facade of the cathedral Toeska executed in the neoclassical style. In 1846, construction began on the chapel by the architect Eusebio Chelly.
At the end of the XIX century, Archbishop Mariano Casanova ordered a series of changes that turned the cathedral in the building that we see today. For work, he invited the architect Ignacio Kremones in 1898. The new design of the church was carried out in a mixture of Tuscan and Roman styles. The roof is designed as a barrel vault on support. In front of the altar there were choruses and space for worshipers. The decor of the cathedral is richly decorated with stucco, frescoes, icons and gold leaf. The ceiling in the aisles formed of small domes, one in each aisle, which are separated by arches. The cathedral appeared authority, two chairs and an altar made of mahogany.
The current tower was replaced by two new ones. They divided the upper part of the facade, which have been installed a sculpture of St. John, the Virgin Mary and St. Roch. The main altar was created in Munich in 1912 of white marble with bronze decorations.
In the crypt of the church lie the remains of all the bishops and archbishops of Santiago. Since the beginning of 2005 for the year was carried out reconstruction of the main altar and the crypt. During this reconstruction it was built a new vault and a small chapel.
In 2010, during the earthquake, the building of the cathedral was damaged again. The Government of Chile began the restoration of the facade, in April 2014 and planned to complete all the work by the end of the year.
