Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere was founded in the III century Holy Callixte and completed under Pope Julia I. In the course of centuries, despite numerous restorations, it basically remains unchanged its original appearance. And only in the XVIII century, Pope Clement VII commissioned the architect Carlo Fontana to build the portico. The facade of the church is crowned with high tympanum and decorated with richly decorated portals. Next to the basilica stands a beautiful Romanesque bell tower of the ancient bell under her roof.

Basilica to this day remains a place of worship of the Virgin Mary. Images of the Virgin Mary prevail in the interior of the church, including the magnificent mosaics XII-XIII centuries. The most ancient image of the Virgin Mary is the icon of VII century "Clemenza di Madonna" in the Chapel Altemps.
