Rimondi Fountain

In the heart of the old town of Rethymnon on the Platano Square is the famous Rimondi Fountain, which for the past four centuries offers weary passers sip of fresh water.

Rimondi Fountain was built in 1626. A Venetian governor Rimondi city to provide residents with drinking water. Supposedly this place was more old fountain built in 1588, and the governor proceeded to its reconstruction. In the Venetian period of Crete in many cities felt an acute shortage of water. For most practical needs of the residents use rainwater collected in special tanks and wells constructed. Thus, the water fountains of the city meets the needs of the population in drinking water. In Rethymno there are seven other fountains in different parts of the city, four of which were built by the Turks.

The facade of the fountain is a architrave with four fluted Corinthian columns, standing on a small hill above the three swimming pools, where water flows. Pools were used as feeder cup for animals. The holes from which water flows, presented in the form of lions' heads embedded in the marble wall. Architrave decorated with a Latin inscription of two words "Liberalitatis" and "Fontes". Between the middle columns in marble carved elegant coat of arms of Rimondi. After the capture of the city by the Turks in 1646 the fountain was surrounded by a wall, and completed the dome. However, these developments have not been preserved. Perhaps they destroyed themselves or they deliberately destroyed by the locals.
