The National Museum in Poznan (Folk Museum) - public cultural institution, one of the largest museums in Poland. There is a rich collection of Polish painting from the 16th century, as well as a large collection of Italian and Dutch painting. In 2005, the National Museum was added to the roster of museums.
The National Museum in Poznan was founded in 1857 by the Society "Friends of Science" as a museum "of Polish and Slavic Antiquities". His appearance is obliged to major museum Severin Milzunskomu philanthropist who donated a large collection of paintings, as well as the acquired land for the needs of the museum. The grand opening of the museum took place in 1882.
Later, in Poznan it was founded by a German museum. It was opened in 1894 and was named the Provincial Museum, but in 1902 was renamed the Museum of Emperor Frederick III.
In 1919, after the restoration of independence of Poland, there was an actual merger of the two museums. Ultimately, the museum was divided into three branches: the Gallery of Painting and Sculpture, Archaeological Museum, Museum of Natural History. Currently, the National Museum also include the Museum of Applied Arts, the Ethnographic Museum, the Museum of the city of Poznan and Musical Instrument Museum.
During World War II, the museum building was damaged, and a collection of partially destroyed. In 2001, the museum opened a new wing, gave the collection of paintings and sculptures.
The museum's collections is divided into seven themed galleries: Gallery of Antiquity, Gallery of the Middle Ages, the Polish art of 16-18 centuries of European art gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, Art Gallery of Polish World War II, as well as the department of graphic design and posters.
