Located in a small, wooded hills lost in the town of Orchha Palace Yahangir Mahal is a monument of the true Mughal architecture. It was erected in 1598 for the Mughal prince of Salem, better known as the Mughal Emperor Yahangira. Building marked the victory of Prince over his archenemy Vir Singh Deo and had to perform the role of a military fort to maintain the power of Salem on the new conquered territory.
The citadel was built on a hill off a wonderful view of the surrounding territory. It is a whole complex of buildings made of yellow sandstone. The palace has three floors, each of which has large hanging balconies, roof is decorated with a lot of different sized towers, domed. On each side of the main gate of the palace are located the statues of elephants, bells are ringing, sandwiched in the trunk, heralded the arrival of the governor.
Internal chambers are striking in their elegance and magnificence: carved columns, delicate arches, a lot of decorative elements. Some rooms of the palace were painted with intricate designs depicting scenes from the life of the ruler, flowers and animals, as well as with mosaic tiles. In some places the painting clearly discernible. On the whole, the palace is well preserved, thanks to the fact that the city of Orchha was not strategically important object, so he has not been given much attention, and he suffered only minor disruptions during the numerous wars fought on this land.
On the territory of Yahangir Mahal runs a small hotel, which nourish a passion for history and desire to plunge into the atmosphere of medieval India. But so lovers of antiquity have to share the place of residence with the indigenous inhabitants of the palace - the monkeys, which do not be afraid of the people and feel the true masters of the palace.
