Located in the western part of the Turkish half of Nicosia ancient mosque of Arab Ahmet Pasha, it is considered one of the most striking examples of native Ottoman religious architecture. It was built back in the end of XVI - early XVII century and bears the name of one of the generals of the Turkish army, who was also Governor General of Rhodes. Earlier in her place stood an old Roman Catholic church. In 1845 the building was completely restored, and the last time it carried out repairs at the end of the last century. Now this mosque is one of the most famous in the city.
The building itself has a fairly small size, but is particularly elegant. The roof construction is surmounted by a beautiful dome with a diameter up to six meters. Facade attracts attention with its arched colonnade and a balcony minaret - a skilful ornament carved from stone. The courtyard of the mosque is decorated with a beautiful fountain in Oriental style for the washing of the feet before praying. Inside the building is decorated simply, that the Middle East is traditional for such buildings.
Just next to the mosque in the garden with lush greenery, it is a small cemetery where famous Turkish Cypriots, political and public figures. So, there you can see the grave of Yitzhak governors and Hafiz Pasha Hassan, the Grand Vizier of Turkey Kemal Pasha, and many others. In addition, the local imam never refuse to talk about the history of Arab Ahmet Pasha and spend a little tour of this interesting place.
It is also believed that the mosque kept the hair from the beard of the Prophet Muhammad.
