Peace Park in Nagasaki can be called a place of eternal sorrow and hope of the world. This open-air memorial dedicated to the many thousands of Japanese people - those who died on the day of the atomic explosion on Aug. 9, 1945, and those who later died of wounds and diseases caused by radiation exposure. The total number of those killed in the explosion and the day after it is nearly 150 thousand people.
Prior to the bombing at the site is now the Peace Park, housed Urakamskaya prison. 500 meters from the epicenter of the explosion was Urakami Cathedral, from the debris in 1955 was collected by the column, which now represents the epicenter of the tragedy. This monument is a symbol of prayer for peace.
Every year on August 9 in the park held a memorial ceremony, during which the mayor of Nagasaki Peace Declaration read out in all the world. The ceremony takes place at the foot of the Statue of the world - a 10-meter monument, created by sculptor Seibo Kitamura. The monument was erected in 1955 and is the man who points out one hand to the sky, calling to remember the disaster and its victims, and the other points of the world. At the foot of the monument are always fresh flowers.
In the southern part of the park is "Fountain of Peace", was built in August 1969. It is dedicated to the people who survived the explosion, but died after in search of water.
In the late 70-ies in the park, it was decided to erect a monument-symbols of peace. The sculptures were donated to the twin cities and different countries in the period from 1978 (monument of the world from the twin city of Porto, Portugal) and 2006 (monument "Cloak of Peace" from New Zealand). Sculpture "Peace" was given to the Soviet Union in 1985. Monument of the American city of St. Paul "Constellation Earth" appeared in the park in 1992. Also, there are monuments from the non-existent now states - East Germany and Czechoslovakia.
