The town hall is located in the center of Mulhouse, on certain days has held a meeting of city government. In addition, there are wedding ceremonies. But most visitors come to the former town hall in order to visit the museum and learn about the history of the city.
Mulhouse City Hall was built in 1553 and was intended for meetings of the city council. The philosopher Michel de Montaigne, admiring its shape, called the building "magnificent gilded palace." Hall really was painted in red paint with gold - though mainly because the city authorities have decided to save money on stucco ornaments and other relief and ordered just draw them. And today, the pink facade of the town hall is called fraud. It is possible to see the shapes that represent human virtues. From a distance, they are really easy to be mistaken for sculptures, but they just are elaborately drawn pictures.
The building of the town hall was built on the foundations of the former, which was built in 1431 and burned down in the middle of the XVI century. Construction of the new city hall was started immediately, barely had time to clean up the charred remains of a previous building. For the design of the facade has been invited artist Jean Gabriel, author of the mural. Among the figures, embodying the virtues also depicted the prophet Moses with the tablets.
On one of the walls of the town hall you can see the stone head fearsome. This is a copy of so-called "stone boltushek", through which up to the XVIII century punished gossips. Punishable had to carry this head weighing 12 kilograms from the town hall to the gate of the city and bring it back. The original "stone boltushek" kept in the museum, which is located in the town hall.
The museum also presents everyday objects myuluztsev - clothes, furniture, toys, and even paintings and historical documents. Exhibits in this museum can be called and save details of the interior Hall - candle holders, emblems and Mulhouse in Alsace, the elements of decor.
