In Ruzaevsky district of Mordovia region, in the village is Paygarma Ascension Monastery, founded in 1865. The monastery was consecrated in the name of the Holy Martyr Paraskeva, whose miraculous icon was found on this site in the eighteenth century.

According to the chronicles of the monastery, the history of the Mordovian shrine begins with a soldier who suffer from the disease of feet and finds comfort only in prayer. Face of St. Paraskeva, who appeared sick soldiers, announced the location of icons and healing holy spring in the village Paygarma. He embarked on his feet healed soldiers chapel built over a spring found a way. The news of the miraculous icon spread far beyond the region and caused massive pilgrimage to these places. Icon-found the soldier, not just brings peasants from Ruzaevsky chapel in the church, but the next morning found the image in its place, at the source. The original image has been lost over time. In the nineteenth century instead of the lost icon in Athos monastery was written new icon martyr Paraskeva, framed in silver-gilt robe with particles of holy relics specifically for Paygarmskogo monastery.

In July 1865 at the location of the icons has been formed Paraskevi Ascension community. In 1895, the temple complex was built, including the Church of the Assumption and Ascension. Paraskevi Ascension Monastery in the nineteenth century was one of the populous and well-appointed Russian monasteries.

Today Paraskevi Ascension women's monastery is considered a historical and architectural jewel of the Mordovia region and place of pilgrimage for Orthodox Christians.
