Piazza Duomo and the Cathedral - one of the main attractions of Messina. Tourists come to the city always stop here to admire the fountains, expressive bell tower of the cathedral and, in fact, by the cathedral, built in the Norman style.

Fountain of Orion was designed by the engineer Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli, follower of the great Michelangelo, after the appearance of the first aqueduct in the city and dates back to the 16th century. Luxury classic fountain is in the form of the composition of the four rivers - the Nile, the Tiber, Ebro and the Canaro. The upper bowl of the fountain surmounted by a statue of Orion, the mythical founder of Messina.

The square is dominated by the cathedral with its striking facade. It was built during the Norman domination in Sicily, but later rebuilt, after it was destroyed by the Saracens. Then, for several centuries it was the center of religious life of the city, while in 1908, has not appeared in the ruins of the devastating earthquake, Messina erased from the face of the earth. From the original building are preserved only fragments of walls. The reconstruction of the cathedral began in 1919 - the architects have tried not only to adhere to the original Norman style, but also added elements of later periods. That is why today in the building you can see traces of Renaissance and Baroque architecture. The facade of the cathedral is decorated with bas-reliefs depicting scenes of everyday life in the city of the 14th century, from the cultivation of fields to livestock. Three entrance to the cathedral is Gothic.

Special mention deserves the bell tower, also built in the early 20th century - it stands to the left of the facade of the cathedral. From the top of the bell tower with a breathtaking view of the Messina.
