Manila Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral - Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, - an outstanding work of architecture, a Catholic church located in Manila in the territory of the ancient district of Intramuros. The first church on this site was built in 1581, and the present - the sixth - in 1958. In 1981, he was consecrated as a "minor basilica". Today it is the residence of the Archbishop Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales of the Philippines.

The first cathedral built here in 1581 from bamboo and palm tree, was seriously injured during a typhoon in 1582, and a year later was completely destroyed by fire .  Ten years later, in its place erected a stone church that stood until 1600 and collapsed in the earthquake .  Third Cathedral began to build in 1614 - building consisted of three naves and seven chapels .  It is also affected by the earthquake in 1645 .  From 1654 to 1671 years in the territory of Intramuros erected a magnificent fourth cathedral, which stood for nearly two centuries, and in 1863, was severely damaged by the next earthquake .  In 1880 the bell tower collapsed, and up until 1959, the cathedral did without it .  Fifth Catholic church was built from 1870 to 1879 years - a cross on the main dome served as a guide in determining the astronomical longitude .  However, during the bombing of the city in 1945. The Cathedral was destroyed almost to the ground .  Only in 1954 began the construction of the next, the sixth cathedral - building lasted until 1958 . 

The main facade of Manila Cathedral is decorated with statues of famous saints, made of white Italian limestone. Inside the cathedral are buried two Philippine President - Carlos Garcia and Corazon Aquino. The latter died in 2009, and became the first woman whose body was exposed in the cathedral for the farewell. According to the protocol may only Filipino Archbishop to receive this honor.
