Convent of San Francisco (St. Francis of Assisi) is located to the south of the park of La Muralla, one block to the north-east of the Plaza Mayor of Lima. Church and Convent of St. Francis are part of the historical center of Lima, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991.

Church and convent were consecrated in 1673. Although the building of the monastery and the church survived several strong earthquakes in 1687 and 1746, as a result of the earthquake in 1970, the buildings suffered considerable damage.

The church of St. Francis is an example of Spanish baroque architecture in Peru. The arches of the central and two side aisles embody a combination of Spanish and Moorish designs and made Mudéjar. The main altar is completely carved out of wood. The corridors of the monastery inlaid Sevillian glazed tiles.

The monastery complex consists of the church, the monastery and two churches - La Soledat and El Milagro. The library of the monastery is an internationally renowned repository of ancient manuscripts. It keeps about 25 000 unique texts, some of them - the pre-Hispanic period. The most famous book - "Spanish Dictionary," published the Spanish Royal Academy, and the "Holy Bible", printed in Antwerp with the 1571- 1572 year. Ladder library has a spectacular shape and is made in the Moorish style of the Nicaraguan cedar.

Among the famous temple of artifacts - 13 paintings, including the famous painting "The Last Supper" brush Diego de la Puente. The monastery also owns several paintings attributed to artists Peter Paul Rubens school.

In 1943, in the catacombs of the monastery it was discovered the crypt which contains thousands of human skulls and bones. It is estimated that there were 25,000 buried human bodies. The crypt is built of brick and concrete, withstood all the earthquakes on the Peruvian coast. It was used until 1808 for the disposal of the inhabitants of Lima.
