Located right in the heart of Larnaca majestic stone church of Saint Lazarus is one of the oldest and most revered architectural and religious monuments from the Byzantine period .  It was built in the IX century by Emperor Leo VI in the burial place of St. Lazarus, who was a contemporary of Jesus Christ and the Evangelical party events .  After his resurrection, he settled in the city of Kition, the site of which is now in Larnaca, and became its first Archbishop .  It was there during the excavations was discovered the tomb of Lazarus, which had the inscription "Lazarus the Four, the friend of Christ" .  It is believed that this finding and gave its name to the new city, because it comes from the word "larnaks", which translated means "sarcophagus" or "tomb" .  Now the sarcophagus can be seen in the church - it is installed under the altar .  But there remains of the saint itself is long gone - they were taken to Constantinople .

Previously, a monastery near the church. Later, in one of its rooms, which is located in the west wing of the former monastery complex was created by a small religious and archaeological museum where you can see the real masterpieces that are unique pieces of art of the Byzantine era. This is mainly icons, including carved wood, items used during religious rites, ancient scrolls and manuscripts, wooden sculpture, several ancient copies of the Bible. Particular attention should be paid to available in the museum's collection of icons Lazarus - there are some really valuable pieces. So, on one of them, which was severely damaged by fire, a miracle to save the image of the saint - in one hand he holds the Gospel and the other composed of blessing.
