The famous Kamares Aqueduct, also known as the aqueduct Bekir Pasha, located on the outskirts of Larnaca - one of the most popular tourist places in Cyprus. It was created when this town, at the time he was called The Rock, was under the control of the Ottomans, on the initiative of the ruler of Abu Bekir Pasha and his own funds in the years 1746-1747.
The name "Kamares" (from the Greek. "Arches"), it is very suitable - water has a length of over 10 kilometers and consists of 75 high arches. There were 3 created a "bridge" for 32, 12 and 31 of the arch - in order to keep the water at the same level in those places where the aqueduct had to be laid in the ravines. Thanks to this has been solved one of the main problems of the city, due to a lack of water, before people had to bring water from a source located a few kilometers from the village. After completion of the water from the aqueduct at Tremitos goes directly to Larnaca. Such a system used by the citizens until 1939, when, finally, there was built a modern water supply system.
Unfortunately, up to now only partially preserved Kamares - after the city began actively to be upset, the aqueduct was heavily damaged. Therefore, in the municipality of Larnaca, a special committee consisting of experts of different directions, that is to monitor the safety of this architectural and historical monument. Besides, we are actively working to stop construction near Kamares and turning the area into a tourist pedestrian zone.
