Villa d'Este, once bearing the name of Villa del Garowe - is an aristocratic estate, built in the Renaissance style in the town of Cernobbio on Lake Como. But the story of her start in the middle of the 15th century, when Gerardo Landriani, bishop of Como, in 1442 decided to found a nunnery in the estuary Garowe .  One hundred years later, Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio ordered to demolish dwelling and construct in its place their own summer residence .  Construction work, which lasted from 1565 and 1570 years, led by the architect Pellegrino Tibaldi .  While Gallio was in power, his villa was a real refuge for politicians, intellectuals and religious leaders .  After the death of Cardinal Villa del Garowe became the property of his family and partly declined .  From 1749 to 1769-th years, there was a Jesuit Center, and then the structure several times passed from hand to hand until 1784, the year the villa has not acquired the Milanese family Calderara, which initiated a large-scale restoration work .  At the same time around the villa it was laid out with a wonderful Italian garden nymphaeum (a sanctuary with artificially created a grotto) and the temple, which houses the statue of Heracles 17th century .  After the death of the Marquis Calderara his widow Vittoria Peluso, former ballerina Milan's "La Scala", re-married Count Domenico Pino, in whose honor the garden was built a fortress comic .

In 1815 the villa was the residence of Caroline of Brunswick, wife of the future King George IV. It was she who gave the estate to his new name - Nuova Villa d'Este (named after the famous Villa d'Este near Rome) and ordered him to reschedule the English-style garden.
