Kumarakom bird sanctuary, or whatever it is called Park Vembanad, is a paradise for avid bird watchers, and just for lovers of beautiful views and enjoy a relaxing holiday. This scenic area is located in the territory of the southwestern Indian state of Kerala, on the shores of the largest in the state of Vembanad Lake and river Kavanar, 14 kilometers from the city of Kottayam.
The main attraction of Kumarakom is, of course, fauna - a huge number of birds as sedentary or migratory. Especially numerous species such as the cuckoo, common heron, egret, cormorant, the water hen (it is also called swamp), darter, Brahmin kite, white crane, various species of owls and ducks. You can also observe birds such as the parrot, teal, flycatcher, when they arrive for the winter from the Himalayas and Siberia.
In addition to bird watching from the shore, if desired, in the park you can rent a boat and make a small "trip" or on the waters of Vembanad Kavanary.
The most successful and favorable time to observe a sunset, when the birds return to their nests, and the time just before sunrise, when they leave them.
Since 2008, WWF-India organizes special two-day tours to the reserve for bird watchers and fans to watch the birds. A Tourism Development Corporation of Kerala (Kerala Tourism Development Corporation) plans to open in the reserve international center for birdwatching.
