One of the most famous and notable institutions of the city of Kostroma was the Museum of theatrical costumes. In mid-1812 from Moscow to Kostroma arrived Imperial Theatre in Moscow, which had a great influence on the repertoire of the new theater, influenced by the culture of the city. The theater building was built in 1863 and still remained in fairly good condition, virtually unchanged. It has become an excellent example of the traditional classical architecture with outstanding buildings of Kostroma - home Borshchov and fire tower.

The exposition is on display visitors 15 different costumes, previously used in the productions of the same name works of Ostrovsky - "Not a penny, and suddenly Altyn", "Forest", "On any Wise Man Stumbles", "Ardent Heart", "The Last Victim ". In addition, the exhibition includes photographs and sketches of these performances. It is worth noting that the oldest costume became outfit, sewn in 1963, which is in excellent condition preserved to this day.

At the moment in the building of the museum carried out repair work after the completion of which there will be presented the new exhibition on the second floor and in the basement. Fruitful work continues on a new exhibition, which is devoted entirely to Fyodor Volkov. The museum plans to have an idea of ​​installation of life behind the scenes and the actors on stage. In addition, it is planned to equip the auditorium of the 19th century.
