One of the iconic sights of the city of Khabarovsk is the majestic Cathedral of the Assumption, installed on Cathedral Square.
Church of the Assumption came through Khabarovsk parishioners who wanted to appear in their city a temple dedicated to the great feast of the Assumption. In 1870, the Archbishop of Irkutsk has allocated a large sum of money to build the temple. That same year, the local authorities have decided on the construction of the temple.
The cathedral was built 15 years. During construction work, there were many obstacles, but they only served to strengthen the faith of believers. The author of the project of the cathedral was made by the engineer S. Baer. He supervised all construction work of a famous colonel B. Moore.
By 1887 the cathedral with the gold-domed cupolas became a real adornment not just the main square but the whole of Khabarovsk. At the beginning of the same year Khabarovsk priests held here the first service. In December 1890 the consecration of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. By 1905 it completed the construction of the main parts of the temple - shining gold dome five simple blinds all around.
In 1930, the cathedral was severely looted and almost completely destroyed. It faded luxurious iconostasis, magnificent icons, frescoes on the walls. The revival of the cathedral began only 80 years later. The temple was rebuilt. In late 2001, the dome of the temple of suffering again shone on the banks of the Amur River. The former architectural style of the church embodied in a memorial chapel. The main shrine of the chapel is an icon of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
