Defensive barracks Kronprinz - a unique monument of military engineering architecture, is the subject of historical and cultural heritage (of national importance), located in the heart of Kaliningrad. Construction of fortifications, part of the second rampart fortification ring of Koenigsberg, started in October 1843 on the west side of the mouth of the Pregel project military engineer Ernst Ludwig von Aster. In 1848, Crown Prince Barracks deployed elite units of Königsberg garrison. One of the first "tenants" was the first Grenadier Regiment, the people affectionately called "crown princes".

Defensive barracks is a four-story building with a pentagonal massive square towers at the corners, a large courtyard (used initially as a parade ground), deep cellars and underground passage connecting to the barracks bastion Grolman. Fortifications surrounded by a moat on the part of the city and has a central tower-Redan. Such forms of defensive towers used redoubts in buildings intended to fight the enemy invading the city, taking the part of the city on the defensive. In 2003, the Tower-Redan was transferred to the National Centre for Contemporary Art.

In April 1945 (when the assault of Koenigsberg) the walls of the defensive barracks were fights, but the building was not involved in the assault and were surrounded by Soviet troops until the end of the general capitulation. After the war, on the territory of the barracks at various times were: a penal battalion, training tank regiment, navigation school, warehouses and shops. Nowadays the territory of a unique monument of military architecture occupy: a branch of Moscow State University of Technology and Management, the eponymous restaurant, scientific and technical training center KVSHU and other organizations.
