National Monument - a pylon, which is in the middle of Medan Merdeka, Freedom Square, Central Jakarta. Pylon height reaches 132 meters, and the tower is a symbol of the struggle for the independence of Indonesia and was built to serve as a reminder of those who died in the fight.

The construction of this majestic monument was started in 1961 at the direction of President Sukarno. Sukarno was President of Indonesia from 1945 to 1967. It is worth noting that President Sukarno is assigned the honorary title of "National Hero of Indonesia", the title of which is given by the Government of Indonesia for its contribution to the struggle for independence and the development of the Indonesian state. The public opening of the monument took place in 1975. The top of the monument is in the form of the flame and is made of gold leaf.

Construction of the monument took place in three stages. The first phase lasted from 1961 to 1965. In August 1961, President Sukarno laid at the official ceremony the first pile of the monument. Total for the base of the monument were scored 284 piles of concrete and construction of the foundation of the museum has been used 360 piles. Foundation works were completed in March 1962, and in October were completed walls of the museum. After construction began of the obelisk, which ended in August 1963. The next stage of construction (1966-1968) was accompanied by delays due to lack of funding, but also because of the "September 30 Movement" when the organization, which consisted of pro-communist minded officers, tried to carry out a coup on the night of September 30 to October 1, 1965 of the year. The last stage of construction lasted from 1969 to 1976. The museum diorama added, as well as needed to complete the remaining technical work in the museum.

The official opening of the monument took place in July 1975. It is worth noting the fact that the architecture of the monument embodies the Hindu philosophy of Linga and Yoni, indivisible unity of male and female. The monument stands on a square platform, which is located inside the museum. The museum offers presented on display 50 dioramas depicting the history of the people of Indonesia. On top of the tower at a height of 115 m, there is an observation deck. On the north side of the monument is a statue of an Indonesian hero Diponegoro.
