Wayang Museum, located in the western part of the area Fatahillah. Wayang Museum tells visitors about the "wayang" - Indonesian shadow theater, in productions that used puppets "wayang".

Such shadow theater are widespread on the islands of Java and Bali. The puppets are made of buffalo leather, then the figure is attached to bamboo rods. Figurines dalang moves behind the screen, the actor-puppeteer. Most often dalang is the narrator, in addition, he sings and sometimes even composes the plot.

The museum was built on the spot where once stood the church .  The temple was built in 1640 and was called the Old Dutch Church .  In 1732 the church building was updated, and the temple became known as New Dutch Church .  In 1808 an earthquake destroyed the church .  Later, in 1912, on the ruins of the church built a new building, in a neo-Renaissance .  First, the building housed the warehouse of the company «Geo Wehry & Co» .  In 1938 the building was restored, giving the features of the Dutch colonial style .  Later, the building was bought by the scientific community of Batavia, which deals with issues of culture and science in Indonesia .  The scientific community has transferred the building fund of the Old Batavia, and in 1939 there was a museum of the Old Batavia .  In 1957, after Indonesia gained its independence, the building was handed over to the Indonesian Institute of Culture, and then - to the Ministry of Education and Culture .  After all the red tape, in 1968 the administration of the Capital District of Jakarta has decided to establish in this building Museum Wayang .  The grand opening of the museum took place in 1975 . 

Due to the large collection of the museum, visitors can learn more about wayang puppets and art, such as "shadow theater". In the museum you can see the wayang kulit, (shadow theater), wayang-Golek (theater wooden dolls). On display are exhibited dolls from other countries, such as Malaysia, Thailand, China, Vietnam, India, Cambodia, Suriname. After visiting the museum, visitors can learn about the gamelan - the traditional Indonesian orchestra.

Periodically, the museum shows performances of wayang puppets, as well as master classes for their manufacture.
