Amazon Animal Rescue (CREA) emerged thanks to the joint efforts of "Dallas World Aquarium" (Texas, USA), the regional government of Loreto, the Research Institute of the Peruvian Amazon and Acobia-DWAzoo. Its aim is to develop programs to rescue, rehabilitate and release into the wild aquatic mammals - such as the manatee, the Amazonian river dolphin white, black and pink dolphin endangered. In addition, it developed and already has a program of environmental education, which contribute to the conservation of wildlife species in the ecological balance of the ecosystem.
The Fund reports that in the Amazon manatees are threatened with extinction due to poaching and destruction of their habitats. Although there are international and national laws that protect these animals, the problem is not fixed, as in many Amazonian peoples decided to hunt and eat the meat of these animals. The problem is compounded by the illicit trade in cubs manatees, which are sold as pets, and because of the difficulty in caring for them, the mortality rate among them is very high. In order to stop this, in late 2007, when the Amazon Animal Rescue Service began its work manatee rescue center. Since then, it has been successfully rescued and released more than 25 manatees.
In addition, the work of salvation CREA performs environmental education program with the participation of children from basic schools in the city of Iquitos and the surrounding communities. CREA director Javier Velasquez explained the importance of the rescue center and is in talks to attract children in the region of Loreto and 48 communities in environmental education.
The Animal Rescue Service Amazon attracts about 30,000 visitors a year. There are guided tours where visitors can take part in the care of the manatees, river dolphins, armadillos, otters, turtles and other animals of the Amazon, to learn more about these species, their habitats. This place has become the main point of ecotourism in Loreto and has received recognition from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism.
