Grodno Zoo - the oldest in Belarus. It was founded in 1927 by a remarkable Grodno naturalist, an enthusiast of the business, teacher, teacher Grodno gymnasium Jan Kochanowski.

First in Grodno gets its botanical garden. It was created by an experienced site that helps students visualize the gymnasium to study botany. On beds and beds they grew various plants and watched them grow. Then, for the same educational objectives, the zoological department was created. It contained various animals, both agricultural and taken from the wild. The students learned to care for them. Small biological garden grew and he needed more space. In the early thirties Kochanowski made from Grodno magistrate's permission to use a former zoo abandoned bicycle track.

After the unification of Western Belarus and the Belarusian SSR, the zoo became a public institution, and it took care of the Soviet state. This event had a positive impact on the activities of the zoo. There are not only new and interesting animals, but the zoo has had an opportunity to educate the public. What Jan Kochanowski, as a teacher, was very pleased.

The Great Patriotic War has brought irreparable damage to the zoo. The biggest loss was the shooting of Jan Kochanowski in 1942. All valuable animals were exported to Germany, the rest destroyed. Immediately after the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders, the Soviet government decided to restore the zoo. We had to be very difficult. The animals were nowhere to take, and even those few who managed to get, nothing to feed.

In 1946, as director of the Grodno zoo was appointed AR Ganusevich. He immediately set to work. After receiving public funds for the restoration of the zoo, he planted trees lined paths, restored the water supply and electricity, asked for help from other zoos in the acquisition of animals. Grodno Zoo has become one of the best in the country. By 1989, it contained 326 species of animals.

Hard times for the zoo began in the 90s, when there was no state funding, everyone was busy with their own affairs and no one needed a zoo with its problems and its animals. In 2002 it began a new period of prosperity zoo. Grodno zoo was given substantial state aid, began its reconstruction, the total area of the zoo has been increased to more than 5 hectares. By 2008, the renovation was completed.
