For one of the most famous monasteries Veliky is Ivanovsky Convent, located in the neighborhood of Mountain. The composition of the Ivanovsky Convent consisted of: Church of St. John the Baptist Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, who was subjected to the devastating fire in 1921, and the Fraternal cells.

The monastery was founded in 1262. Its appearance and construction is closely related to Tatar Bugoy Baskakov. While the situation of the Russian people was quite depressing. Bug living then Ustyugov took in a tribute to the daughter of a respectable citizen of Mary. On baskak ganged many Russian princes. Then he came to Mary and asked her to save him. Maria advised to be baptized, after that they were married. After the baptism of the Bug was given the name John. According to legend, he built the church of St. John the Baptist, and then John the Baptist monastery.

Three-tiered bell tower of the monastery has been turned to the city and is crowned with a cross and an apple. Mountainside tiled staircase was added, and under the hill was a small wooden chapel, which is now gone. The chapel was located bowl, lined with marble, in which the water flowed from the spring. Also in the monastery had a hospice for old women, a hospital, a bakery and a house for receiving itinerant people. Residents of the monastery is beloshveynymi and gold embroidery crafts. For a masterful job on the southwest side of the spacious enclosure was built, which burned down in 1900 and in 1904 was re-built project Kuritsina VN

In 1888 the monastery was opened diocesan women's college. Over the years 1899-1913, when the abbess of the monastery was Paisija abbess in the monastery held a global repair and construction work, during which the new church was laid. After the October Revolution in a building intended for shops Affairs, began its work with a vocational school dormitory, but soon it was closed.

The main monastery church has not come down to our days, and was considered the only church in Veliky Ustyug, built in the early 20th century. The architect of the temple has become Kuritsin Vladimir, a draft of which was approved by the Holy Synod in 1908. The first tab of the temple took place May 25, 1909.

In the architectural sense, the building of the monastery is a symmetrical cross made .  The temple was located four inputs: two inputs are intended for business purposes, while the other two were considered the main entrance to the parishioners .  Each of the inputs had his porch with a cupola .  Under the project, the central dome was the completion of the helmet, but in fact, it was built up into a more elongated form .  In the central part of the dome has a broad band is not finished iron .  In this case, there are a few scenarios: first - especially emphasized the membership of the Church of John the Baptist, as indicated by beheading temple chapter; second - it presupposes the existence of a light strip that can operate over long distances; the third option - the dome of the temple just did not go as planned, to cover the iron, because the latter was seized in 1919, still during the reign of Soviet power .

In the northern part of the temple was located refectory limiting the altar, consecrated in honor of the Universal Mother of God, and is separated from the southern side of the iconostasis, between the columns of the image Martyr Theodore. In the northern part of the porch was a limit in the name of St. Barbara, which houses two beautiful image of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and the Holy Trinity with Abraham being written in the late 16th and early 17th century.

The fate of the church was very tragic: in the summer of July 11, 1921 a fire broke out, due to which not only the burned forest, but the dome collapsed again the aligned temple. Years later, on 10 March 1927, it was decided to break all the remains of the temple Pogorevshikh. While the big city lost on all sides of the original structure, which for many years was recognized by experienced experts as unparalleled.
